Copenhagen

Colourful houses in Nyhavn Copenhagen Denmark

If you want to visit a city that lands itself in the top 10 of a lot of lists, Copenhagen is the place to go. It is consistently awarded the third happiest country in the world according to the UN’s World Happiness report. It has also been in the top 10 for the index for the safest cities to visit. So whether you are a seasoned solo travel adventurer or dipping your toe in adventuring alone you cannot go wrong with Copenhagen.

Copenhagen is a city that embodies coolness, from the well-dressed locals to the beautifully designed architecture. Everything felt calm, relaxed and safe as I explored the city. In fact the Danish have such a comfortable lifestyle, they have their own word for it, “hygge”. Hygge means creating a warm atmosphere, enjoying the good things in life with the people you cherish. Whether that’s with a glass of wine in the comfort of a log fire, or cosying up with a loved one.

Now Copenhagen can be an expensive city to visit. But with a bit of planning you can keep the costs down and have an amazing time. There is so much you can do on the cheap, in fact the same day I did the most, was the day I spent the least. So don’t let the fear of going into the red prevent you from enjoying yourself. I did a self-guided walking tour with Around, which took me all around the city, exploring its most famous buildings.

Facts about Copenhagen

The city of Copenghagen is home to not just one, but two of the oldest theme parks in the world. Most people will know of Tivoli, which is right in the centre of Copenhagen. But an even older one can be found 10 minutes north of the city. This is called Bakken and it has been thrilling tourists since 1583.

Your conscience can take a rest when visiting this capital, as it has previously won the award for being the European Green Capital. The plan is to be CO2 neutral by 2025! With bikes being so popular, it’s no surprise that the city embraces being eco-conscious. In fact not only is their harbour so clean that local mussels live in it, but even the local residents like to get in and have a swim! Copenhagen has won (yet another) award for being the Urban Swimming Destination!

Travelling with your tastebuds

For foodies you will be spoilt for choice. Copenhagen is filled with Michelin starred restaurants with every type of cuisine you could desire. Currently there are 15, but if your budget doesn’t stretch that far then fantastic food can be found everywhere. With  a plethora of food markets, street food stalls and bars, each embodying the essence of hygge.

Carlsberg Legacy

Known around the world, Carlsberg is a beer that has created a legacy. But that legacy reaches far behind their golden nectar. Carlsberg has been a company that has given back to their home city, providing it with art and culture by donating to museums. You can see their influence all around as you explore. You can visit the Home of Carlsberg, based in their original brewery and hear all about their history with the city, their values and their great beer.

City Break

If you want a city break where you can fill your travel itinerary so it’s bursting at the seams, Copenhagen is the city for you. You can fit in so much in a short period of time. Equally, If you want to sit back and enjoy the sensation that is hygge, then Copenhagen is the place to be. I came to Copenhagen for 3 nights, which I think is the perfect amount of time for a visit. It depends on what you want to do, and how much you want to see during your time. But with a 3 night stay there were only one or two things I wasn’t able to do.
