Ubud

Tourists bathing in the waters of Tirta Empul Temple in Bali, Indonesia on a post about temple etiquette

Nestled amidst the lush, emerald-green landscapes of Bali, the cultural heart of this Indonesian paradise beats in the enchanting town of Ubud. Renowned as a sanctuary for art, spirituality, and tradition, Ubud weaves together the threads of Balinese heritage in a tapestry that continues to captivate travellers from all corners of the globe. Across my journey to Ubud, I’ll be exploring the essence of this vibrant town that sits amidst terraced rice fields and swaying palm trees.

Balinese Culture

Ubud, located in the central highlands of Bali, offers a tranquil escape from the bustling beaches of the island’s southern coast. As you venture inland, you’ll discover a haven where time appears to slow down, and the air is laden with the aroma of frangipani blossoms. The town’s name, derived from the Balinese word “ubad,” translates to “medicine”. Reflecting its historical significance as a hub for traditional healing and wellness.

One of the defining characteristics of Ubud is its reverence for Balinese culture and spirituality. The town is adorned with intricate temples, or “pura.” Where daily rituals and vibrant ceremonies pay homage to the island’s Hindu beliefs. Among the most famous is the Ubud Royal Palace, a cultural gem that invites visitors to explore its ornate architecture and captivating dance performances.

Touring Ubud

I loved exploring Ubud, our hotel had arranged a personalised tour for us. There is so much on offer here and you are spoilt for choice on where to visit. That’s why a good guide is essential. Ours sat us down and gave us a full rundown of places of interest and activities, so we could choose what interested us the most. There are a plethora of waterfalls to go to but we chose Suwat for the photo opportunity on a bamboo raft.

Travelling directly to some of the tourist hotspots and ensured we maximised our time here. From the picturesque Holy Springs, to exploring the town by Quadbike. We even returned from Seminyak for a morning hike up Mount Batur. Giving us prime views of the sunrise from the peak.

Ubud’s natural surroundings are equally enchanting. The emerald-green rice terraces are a testament to the Balinese tradition of agriculture, harmonising with the natural environment. For the adventurous soul, there are opportunities for trekking and cycling through the undulating countryside. Taking you across breathtaking vistas of terraced landscapes and swaying palm groves. Along the way, you’ll encounter hidden waterfalls and the famous Tegalalang Rice Terraces.

Spa’s and Wellness

Ubud is also a hub for wellness seekers. The town boasts a plethora of yoga and meditation retreats. As well as spas offering traditional Balinese massages and holistic therapies. I would be staying at Arya’s Villas, the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. With stunning views from the pool, morning yoga, and an in-house spa offering all sorts of Balinese treatments. Bali’s rich flora and fauna add to the charm, with verdant jungles surrounding Ubud that are home to curious monkeys and diverse bird species. The sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a must-visit, offering a close encounter with these playful creatures.

Ubud is a stunning destination that continually impressed me. Whether I was exploring its natural wonders or enjoying a cold beer in one it’s bars. If you want a mix of relaxation and nature, Ubud is the place to be.
