Ulanzi MT-14 Desktop Tripod: The Review

I was delighted to receive the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod as part of an accessory gift pack when purchasing my Insta360 Go 3. Seeking a small, lightweight tripod, this addition perfectly complemented my setup. It’s made entirely of plastic, but being really cheap I’m not surprised. Value for money it initially seems excellent but I will see how I feel after the test.

Packability and Weight

Weighing a mere 90g, the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod is exceptionally lightweight, owing to its construction entirely from durable plastic materials. You will hardly notice this in your bag. The Ulanzi MT-14 tripod’s compact size and minimal weight make it effortlessly packable, allowing users to stow it away without a second thought. Easily it’s just as useful to leave on your desk or in a drawer for home recording. It is very small, and would be especially useful if you want to use it in tight places.

Setting up

Setting up the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod is a breeze, requiring just a moment to assemble. If you want to extend then the legs pull out really easily. While the tripod’s legs offer limited adjustability with only two length options, setup remains swift and hassle-free.

Usage

While the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod offers simplicity, its versatility may initially seem limited. You can spend more and get more bells and whistles, but that does raise the cost. You can easily make small upgrades yourself though. The MT-41 allows for adjustable ball heads to be added on top. Enabling you to customize the angle and position of your camera, offering greater flexibility when capturing shots.

Although it may be a bit basic, you can be creative. I incorporated an adjustable ball head mount onto the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod, enhancing smoothness during panning shots. I have had it attached to my camera and mounted two legs onto a railing whilst extending the third. Using the extended leg as a handle, it gives my camera multiple points of contact to improve stability. Featuring a universal ¾ inch screw, the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod offers compatibility with a wide range of camera and device models, ensuring versatile usability. It is just as good with action cameras as it is with my mirrorless.

Usage

Value for money, it’s hard to find fault with the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod. Its affordable, lightweight and can let you get creative. If you know for certain you are going to need a tripod on a trip or shoot, then I would consider something larger like this one from K&F concept I reviewed earlier this year. But there are times when something that size isn’t appropriate. When I am on a city break I don’t really want to be carrying something that big on the off chance I decide to use it. But the Ulanzi MT-14 tripod means I can have something available for more stable shots if the opportunity arises. It’ll mostly be used with my Go 3 but the fact I can use it with my mirrorless if needed without additional attachments makes it worth consideration when packing.
