My bug bear on holidays is being tethered to a plug socket, but on my last few trips I have had moments I couldn’t avoid it. Either my phone needed charging, or my camera was low. Most of my universal travel adapters are barely fast enough for one device, let alone multiple. I have complained for a while I need something faster, so when I saw a youtuber mentioned the Momax Universal Travel GaN Charger 70W, I ordered one immediately.

First Impressions of the Momax 70W Universal Charger
I was really excited to unbox this charger as it long solves an issue I have had for a while. I like a multi-adaptor as I don’t want to spend time working out what chargers I need. And with a potential multi-continent trip on the horizon, I don’t want to have to bring multiples. But many of these chargers are just too slow.
Out of the box, the materials feels solid. It’s body is entirely plastic, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely feels like plastic. The Anker chargers do a great job of using plastic but making it feel more higher end. Still what has been used feels strong enough that it won’t fall apart, but light enough to not fall out of the wall on holiday.
I do like little touches though, like the indents at the side which help with grip. There’s even a choice of colour options, in case you have a partner that’s always stealing your plug. I went for the Titanium, shifting me away from the blackout tech I usually carry.

Charge adaptors
I love how many charging this adapter has. You can use a regular plug for some of your bigger tech items, like straighteners or a hair dryer. But as most tech is now USB, you still have three USB C ports and two USB A ports to use. That is more than enough for me, I wouldn’t consider using every port at the same time because it would drastically slow down charge times. But at 70w I could easily charge my camera gear in the evening before I went to bed.

Charge Speeds
This version is capable of speeds of 70w fast charging, which is really impressive when you compare to other universal travel chargers. Most of my travel chargers sit around 25w, so this is almost triple the speeds. This isn’t even the fastest model in their range, with others that supports up to 170w.
It is only the USB-C port on the side that can reach 70w though, the two on the bottom are significantly slower at 15w. And those speeds drastically reduce when you plug in more than one device.
Power Sharing
The downside of being able to charge multiple devices is that charge speeds do drop. If you plug a second device into the Momox whilst charging using the main USB C, then the main USB C drops down to 45w. Still a pretty decent speed, but something to be aware of.
For what I would use it for, the big drop in speed is a dealbreaker for me. I really loved the charger but I want to be able to charge multiple devices quickly. So I bit the bullet and ordered the 120w version. It sacrifices a bit of packability by being about an inch taller. But more than makes up for it in performance.

Momax 70W Universal Charger Packability
Its small, cubed design is really easy to pack. It is almost twice the size of the Rolling Square Pocket Travel Charger, but has 6x the outputs, so I think that’s a more than fair trade.
Personally I think it’s perfectly designed for how I would use it. I’d have this in my suitcase when going on holiday, and I would leave it in a hotel room. Unless I am planning a day where I am going to work on my laptop in a coffee shop, and I specifically need a faster charger for it, there would be no need to bring it. I want to keep my bag streamlined, so I’d either bring a powerbank or a smaller travel charger instead.
Fuses
In the event that there’s an overcurrent or short circuit, then the Momax 1-World Universal 5-Port Travel GaN Charger 70W has a fuse built in that’s easily replaceable. Without a fuse, in the event of an overload or you use a faulty appliance, there’s a very real risk of fire. Instead the surcharge will cause the fuse to melt, opening the circuit and stopping the flow of power.
Now this will blow the fuse, so you cannot use your charger anymore. In a lot of circumstances, the fuses are difficult to replace, so you would just buy a new one. But when you are travelling that isn’t always possible. Momox makes the fuses easily replaceable, with a simple drawer you remove.
Momox even freed up some room to keep a spare fuse in the body. So if you do have to replace it you can do so within seconds. I was a bit confused at first, as the current fuse can be removed easily by prising it out with my fingernail, but then the replacement is stored in one that requires a flathead screwdriver. But it turns out it was much easier to open by hand instead.
Momax 70W Universal Charger: Final Thoughts
I think this is a fantastic travel adapter, and frankly the step up in charging speeds is a breath of fresh air. However I think for my use and needs, I brought this in haste. I went for the first model without any research, something that’s very rare for me. And there are better versions out there within the same brand.
Of course consider your own priorities, if you want a fantastic performing travel charger then look no further. However for myself I want faster charging across all of my devices, and 15w just isn’t going to cut it for me. So I very quickly swapped this in for the 120w version.
