Arriving in Bucharest
I visited Bucharest for a short city break, with an early morning flight landing me in the city around lunch. Unfortunately my hotel, the Leonardo, had been fully booked the night before so I couldn’t check in early. Graciously though they offered to look after my bag so I could explore unencumbered. The Leonardo is situated right on Calea Victoriei, a fantastic place if you want to grab Gelato. Every few metres it seemed there was another shop dedicated to the dessert. You best believe I endeavoured to try as many as I could.
Historic Old Town and sensational food
I was within walking distance to the Old Town which had some beautiful buildings Bucharest has to offer. It’s a great change of pace as if I’m being honest it’s not the most beautiful city I have ever been to. But it has a few little gems hidden within that are worth walking to and exploring. Just be aware when around here. Where you’ll find tourists, you’ll surely find pickpockets. With both staff at Therme and my hotel warning me to keep my wits. Luckily I had no issues (besides a drink leaking in my bag for the second trip in a row).
My favourite restaurant was in the Old Town. Caru’ cu Bere is a restaurant loved by both locals and tourists. I had to book in advance just to get a seat at lunch, and even then my booking was at 2:30. As I arrived I saw multiple people being turned away because they were too full. Inside this historic building has been lovingly restored, with live violinists playing “the bear necessities” and other popular tunes as I enjoyed my meal.
I was racked with indecision about what to try. The reviews raved about the meatballs, but also the Wagyu burger was not to be missed either. I eventually decided the only logical thing to do was order both. My plane home was in a few hours and I hadn’t had breakfast that morning. Besides you never know if or when you’ll get the opportunity again so why not? I regret nothing. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Although the meatballs, with its beautiful tomato sauce on a bed of creamy mash will hold a special place in my heart.
R&R at Therme Spa
Of course I was here for a spa weekend. So I spent the majority of my time at Therme Spa just outside of the city. This is the largest spa in Europe and despite being here all day I still missed out on a few activities. But I guess that means just another reason to return. I still managed to fit in a massage, facial, drinks around the pool and some relaxation in the sauna so it was still a packed day of pampering.
I’ll be writing all about the places I’ve been to and tips over the next coming weeks. Keep an eye out for regular updates and inspiration for your own trip to Bucharest!
