Croatia has been a destination that for me, keeps showing up on my socials and climbing its way to the top of my bucket list. It is a popular destination for filming, with it playing the backdrop of King’s Landing for Game of Thrones, many locations in Vikings, and even the casino planet Canto Blight in Star Wars.
Zagreb
The capital of Croatia, Zagreb’s origins tie back to the Manduševac well, where a weary traveller asked a local girl to “zagrabi” (“scoop”) him some water. Today, you’ll find that well in Ban Jelačić Square, surrounded by the hum of the Dolac Market.
You’ll have no shortage of places to drink during your visit, with plenty of bars to explore, as well as the odd brewery or two. There’s even a lot of places here named after bears, despite no bears being in the area. There used to be though, however the population has long moved south to the forested regions of Lika and Gorski Kotar.
Dubrovnik
I came to Dubrovnik on my first visit to Croatia, and I hope it isn’t the last. I actually stayed for 6 days (an odd amount of time I know) and loved it. But despite the odd journey time, I managed to fit in a balance of activities and relaxing. I love balanced travel, and it allowed me to feel refreshed without any fomo.
Dubrovnik had so much to offer, from exploring the beauty of the Old Town and its many side streets, to seeing the city from another perspective. You can watch the sun set on the city from the water with a kayaking trip, or even from above at the Panorama Restaurant. It manages to fit all of this in despite being significantly smaller than Split and Zagreb.
Split
If you want to Mediterranean views with a relaxed vibe, then look no further than Split. You can relax on beautiful beaches, explore UNESCO world heritage sites, or enjoy a vibrant nightlife.
Split is a land for island-hoppers, with so many of Croatia’s most famous islands accessible from here. It would be a crime to visit and not get out on the water to explore. Each evening returning to the Riva Promenade to enjoy fresh food on the harbour.
Beyond Croatia
If you are the sort of traveller who often can’t decide where to go, then Croatia is the perfect option. It is so easy to visit nearby countries for a day trip. If you plan it right you can fit in multiple countries on one holiday.
I was spoilt for choice on where to go from Dubrovnik. Bosnia had me tempted with the promise of stunning waterfalls, but ultimately I decided on Montenegro. A lot of my friends had visited recently and the photos looked amazing. You have the choice of private or group tours.
